Bedtime Tips

To help make bedtime easier, set a specific time and stick to it. Children like to know what to expect. If you begin this when they are very young it will be easier as they age. I know there are times when you’re at Grandma’s or visiting friends and you are late getting your children to bed. But for the day to day weeknight routine it is very important to have a consistent bedtime routine.

One trick I used was approximately 30 minutes before the designated bedtime I would let him know it was almost bedtime. I would say you have ten more minutes to play. After that ten minutes passed, I would have him start putting his toys away. That would usually take about ten minutes as there is always a bit more play involved. Then it is time for brushing the teeth and getting in bed. Bedtime was one of my favorite times as I enjoyed the closeness it brought. It was also my special time as this was the hug and kiss time. Once in bed I always read a story. Sometimes more than once!

As he grew and tried to outsmart me, the timer came into play. Always I would give the 30 minute warning. If there was not action being taken when ten minutes had passed I would introduce the timer. I would have him help me set the timer. It helps to have your children involved and understanding what is happening. This way it makes a game of picking up the toys before the timer goes off. And it wasn’t me nagging him. He knew what to expect. When the ten minutes was up it was time to brush teeth and go to bed. Of course bedtime did not always go perfectly, but more often than not it worked.
